Communications Coordinator

Job Title: Communications Coordinator 

Contract 

  • Type: Temporary 
  • Length: 1 year 
  • Hours: 2 days per week, based on 7 hours per day + an hour of unpaid breaks 
  • Location: Yorkshire. Hybrid; split between home and RJN office premises. There will also be some expectation to travel locally, regionally and nationally where required. 

Salary: £27,000 FTE (£10,800 actual)

Key responsibilities 

The role of the Communications Coordinator provides an important core function to the organisation. The key responsibilities of the role are: 

General comms-related administration 

  • Being the first point of contact for the organisation on media platforms; 
  • liaising and communicating with relevant members of the team and external stakeholders on behalf of the organisation; 
  • Managing, monitoring, developing and updating RJN’s website, social media channels and other written, audio and video content, ensuring that it is up-to-date and in alignment with our vision, aims and values; 
  • Work with the wider RJN team to ensure that project and organisation-wide related work is platformed on all communication channels available.

Creating and scheduling content 

  • Creating content for RJN’s social media channels, the website and any newsletters including writing articles, blogs and other forms of written, video and audio content with support from the wider RJN team, members, associates, the Board of Trustees and other relevant people in alignment with RJN’s vision, aims and values; 
  • Scheduling content for RJN’s social media channels including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. 

Media and press 

  • Taking any incoming media requests on behalf of the organisation; 
  • Liaising with relevant members of staff about project-related requests and more generally, the Operations Manager and CLO; 
  • Supporting RJN staff, the Board of trustees and other relevant people associated with the organisation by preparing them for media and public engagements; 
  • Creating press releases with support from relevant people where necessary. 

Monitoring and reporting 

  • Monitoring and compiling regular reports on RJN’s media activity such as metrics, comments and responses and communicating this to the team, CLO and Board as required. 

Relationship building and pastoral support 

  • Pursuing potential partnerships and building trust and relationships that benefit RJN, its vision and those it supports; 
  • Volunteer and member engagement, liaison and support, including liaising with the team to connect volunteers, members, donors and supporters where relevant. 

Team collaboration and support 

  • Supporting the team with communication-related tasks where necessary; Working in collaboration and partnership with the wider RJN team to ensure clarity, consistency and mitigation of risk through due diligence checks and risk assessments that allow practising ongoing accountability to communities both within and external to RJN; 
  • Contributing to organisation-wide events and tasks such as the AGM, celebration events, training, induction etc. 

Other duties, as is reasonable to meet the needs of the most marginalised that all of RJN’s work is centred around. You may also undertake any other relevant tasks in relation to the work of the organisation as requested by the CEO. 

Please note: As the work of RJN is centred around the needs of the most marginalised, your role might change or develop over time. We expect to review your role with you as part of an annual appraisal process to ensure that your experience of the role and the needs of the organisation are reflected.

Who are we looking for? 

We would love to hear from you if you: 

  • Have lived experience of racism and other intersecting structural harms such as ableism, sexism, homophobia and ways of being ‘othered’ by systems of oppression
  • Have a deep understanding and analysis of power, racial (in)justice, intersectionality and social justice, including issues of migration, internationalism and colonialism and an understanding of the socio-political contexts that RJN’s work is situated in.
  • Have excellent communication and project management skills 
  • Are experienced in communications roles – from creating and scheduling content, keeping websites and other public-facing communications up to date, coordinating media and press requests, monitoring and reporting and working collaboratively with a team 
  • Can work autonomously and as part of a team equally well and have a natural affinity to work relationally and collaboratively with the team, our partners and comrades in our work
  • Are aligned with RJN’s values and vision, and have the willingness to learn
